Safety at Every level

Safety to users and to our employees is one or the aspects we care about more at Túnel d’Envalira.

Our tunnel systems are designed and built to guarantee the maximum level of safety in any circumstance, exceeding recommendations issued by international organizations such as CETU (Centre d’Étude des Tunnels) and PIARC (Worlds Road Association).

As a driver, you only have to respect all traffic signs and rules to enjoy your journey through Túnel d´Envalira, especially the following:

  • Keep at least a 70 m safety distance between the vehicle preceding you;
  • Do not use dipped head lights;
  • Do not stop if circulation is normal;
  • Do not perform a U-turn;
  • Do not overtake; and
  • Drive between the maximum speed of 70 km/h and the minimum of 40 km/h if circulation is normal.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A BREAKDOWN?

Your collaboration is very important.

If your vehicle breaks down, follow these instructions:

  • Turn on your emergency lights;
  • Safely leave your vehicle and go to the sidewalk; and
  • Use the nearest SOS post you will find in the tunnel to ask for assistance.

DRIVING IN A TRAFFIC JAM

How to drive?

If you encounter a traffic jam in the tunnel, it’s very important that you follow these instructions:

  • Turn on your emergency lights -this will help other drivers to anticipate and avoid accidents;
  • Turn off the engine if you are stopped for more than two minutes; and
  • Stay in your vehicle.

IMPORTANT IN CASE OF ACCIDENT OR FIRE

If you witness an accident or fire in the tunnel, please follow these instructions:

  • Do not get close to the incident;
  • Turn on your emergency lights;
  • Stop your engine and leave the keys in the car;
  • Follow all instructions given by Túnel d´Envalira´s staff (either via the PA system or verbally) or the emergency services; and
  • Walk, if strictly necessary, on the sidewalk to the tunnel entry you used to access.

  • Semi-transverse ventilation, which includes a full communications system commanded at the control building through sensors.
  • Fire detection

  • SOS posts
  • Cell phone service
  • Alphanumeric signals
  • Hazardous liquids collection
  • Sidings
  • Emergency power units
  • Air pollution and visibility level detection
  • Indicator lamps for guidance

WINTER ROAD MANAGEMENT

Safety 365 days per year.

Túnel d’Envalira has a professional team that watch over the project´s operations 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

During winter, extra precautions are taken due to extreme winter weather that can affect driving conditions and safety.

In order to guarantee the best possible driving conditions of the road, we have two trucks, two pick-ups, four snowplows, a diesel snow blower, a manual snow blower and two gritters.
